Five travel resources to help you plan your South Africa Adventure

You’ve secured your travel dates, booked your international flights, and confirmed your Tread Lite 4×4 rental with us (if you haven’t click here). Now the fun begins – it is time to start planning your big adventure.

If you have been planning your self-drive vacation to South Africa for a while you probably already have a list of favourite websites, blogs and magazines, all helping you etch out that perfect route. If you’ve only just started, perhaps you feeling a little overwhelmed and don’t know where to start. Either way, we are eager to assist. Below we have put together a list of our favourite local travel resources to help you dream up, plan and book your perfect vacation.

The Coast to Coast Guide

http://www.coasttocoast.co.za

Are you an avid backpacker or keen to find awesome budget accommodation across South Africa? Then you will be happy to know that we have some of the best and most unique backpacker hostels and lodges in the world – and The Coast to Coast guide is your bible to all things backpacking in Southern Africa.

Their website is an excellent travel recourse if you prefer trolling the online space for cool places to stay. Their book (available for free around the world) however, is where it’s all at. Whether you want to pre-book your accommodation before you arrive or book as you go, the Coast to Coast guide is the book for you.

SA Campsites

https://www.sacampsites.co.za

South Africa offers some of the best remote camping imaginable. To help you seek out these unique and remote places, check out the SA Campsites website which offers a comprehensive list of camp sites across South Africa as well as our neighbouring countries (Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique, Namibia & Botswana).

The website is still growing as they add more camping options but we love the already comprehensive information included in each listing. If you want to spend your entire South Africa vacation camping across the countryside, this website is for you.

4×4 Community Forum

https://4x4community.co.za/forum/

South African’s love an epic 4×4 adventure and have been trekking across our country for decades. The 4×4 community is an online portal for local adventurers and keen 4×4 enthusiasts. They discuss everything from vehicles to routes and places to stay. If you are looking for some local advice, ask a question on the forum and they will gladly offer up advice on where to stay and what to do.

The Suzuki Jimny has a massive following on the 4×4 community with many passionate zook (as they are known locally) owners sharing detailed travel logs of where they’ve been in their compact 4×4’s.

Getaway Travel Blog

https://www.getaway.co.za

The Getaway Magazine is arguably one of South Africa’s best local travel magazines. Their travel blog is an excellent travel resource which will help you uncover some of the lesser known destinations while also helping you navigate your way through the must see places in Southern Africa.

What we love about the Getaway Travel Blog is the posts are a combination of featured articles by the Getaway team and local travellers eager to share their personal adventures and travel advice. This ensures you have unbiased reviews and ideas to read through as you plan your adventure.

Travel Ground Booking Portal

https://www.travelground.com

For those who enjoy self-catering accommodation, B&B’s and small owner run hotels, check out Travel Ground as an excellent resource for unique places to stay across the country. Think of it as a local South African version of Booking.com. It is not all instant online booking (depending on how the property’s booking system is setup) but be patient and submit your enquiry to them.

While you are searching through their website for places to stay, head over to their travel blog for ideas on where to go – https://www.travelground.com/blog.

Camping in Sondela 4×4 campsite outside Pretoria

We hope you find the above list useful on your journey to creating the ultimate vacation through South Africa. We are of course always on hand to assist with ideas and accommodation bookings if you need. We know our vehicles better than anyone else and can offer advice on how to plan your vacation to ensure your Tread Lite 4×4 adventure is everything you want it to be.
